Contrapposto Research
The physique – truncated, made-up or performed; area – oppressive, blinding or alienating; and sound – disconcerting and haunting: these are the three elementary supplies of the theater of cruelty and absurdity utilized, by way of video, efficiency, images, and sculpture, for almost sixty years by the precursor of physique art (born in 1941 in Indiana), honored on the Punta della Dogana.
Mixing previous pieces (Walk with Contrapposto, Acoustic Wedge …) and their current reinterpretations (by way of interactive modeling, particularly), the exhibition at Palazzo Grassi explores the dramaturgical dimension of this experimental work, putting the body to the check (together with that of the visitor) to point out man in the grips of his demons and his obsessions. The physique caught in a vice, the physique constrained, the body disarticulated… here is the person/puppet lowered to his most tragic expression – that of repetition and dislocation.
