The Galerie de l’immediate in Paris is exhibiting “Madonna 1985,” a collection of legendary photographs by Japanese photographer Kenji Wakasugi, who immortalized the Queen of Pop in her ascension.
Black lace corset, “Healthy” t-shirt, “Boy Toy” belt, rubber bracelets, and Maripol crucifix chain… Madonna Louise Ciccone’s iconic look, together with her hair down, brings again so many reminiscences! Posing, she is aware of perfectly. Madonna has all the time recognized the right way to control her image, as these footage, taken in January 1985, when she first visited Japan to promote her second album, Like a Virgin, which bought 21 million copies worldwide, remind us. The Japanese photographer Kenji Wakasugi says it himself: he only wanted a flash, a pink couch, and 45 minutes to capture the intensity, charisma, willpower, and rebellious spirit of this future pop and trend icon, then 27 years previous.
Trendy and unique
This legendary photograph shoot for Playboy Weekly Excite is a testomony to the avant-garde and nostalgia of the late 20th century. Julia Gragnon of the Galerie de l’prompt found it within the e-book Adore by Kenji Wakasugi, revealed by NJG Studio, which presents many unpublished footage. No marvel she shortly felt the will “to see these pictures in actual life, to have the prints in hand and share them” in her Parisian area. “Madonna was a serious culture shock for tens of millions of women and teenagers, as well as a supply of inspiration and great joy,” she enthuses. “Outraged mother and father, heightened sexuality, trance-like followers… A teenage dream!” Thirty-seven years later, time has carried out nothing to decrease the facility of those pictures. Even more, as she factors out, “they take on an entire new dimension when it comes to the star’s profession, the passage of time, and successive fashions.”
