Luigi Ghirri left too soon. Educated as a surveyor after which as a photographer, he died at the peak of his profession in 1992.
He started to photograph throughout a weekend in 1970. Very hooked up to his country, Italy, he travelled by way of its territory and his native region, Emilia Romagna.
In the future in February 1982, the artist Gianni Leone met him in an previous yellow VW Beetle together with his wife Paola. Canon 35mm in hand, prepared for his or her tour of Puglia, they left early within the morning and returned after sunset.
They spent many evenings speaking, and Ghirri describing to him the standard cities and villages of the world. Gianni “typically heard from him, by phone on the time, however in the summer of that yr, the images taken in Puglia have been ready to be exhibited at Palazzo Città, and at the Fiera del Levante. I asked Luigi if he was comfortable. He answered within the affirmative and advised me that he would quickly ship them residence, asking me to hold them in the order indicated on the back of the photographs. Was there a title? Sure: ‘Tra albe e tramonti. Cento immagini per la Puglia’.”
Many years later, the images have been collected in a e-book with this title.
This volume explores the intimate relationship between Luigi Ghirri and the Apulian area. The unpublished pictures introduced, chosen by his daughter Adele, immerse us in Puglia in the 80s. We discover whitewashed streets, white sand beaches, and streets filled with flowers and potted cacti. These pictures are virtually all unknown to most of the people.
Like a surveyor, he maps out this fascinating city imbued with colour, mild, and that constructive aura that one feels as quickly as dusk falls.
