SOPHIE CALLE : The Ghosts of Orsay

Interweaving previous and present, reality and fiction, reminiscences and fantasies, Sophie Calle weaves troubling tales with little nothings, vestiges of unusual life doomed to decay or oblivion. A virtuoso affabulator, the queen of micro-fiction who, from true-false stories to pseudo-true tales, has been luring us for forty years, returns to the origins of this means of mystification which she has made the substratum of all her work. A mythology of intimacy, making traces and deserted objects into “trophies.” Thus, the small objects, shopper information, and different documents collected in the deserted lodge on the Orsay practice station before its transformation right into a museum. That’s where it all started, in 1978. Haunting the abandoned rooms for months on finish, documenting and reworking the objects found into ready-mades, the visible artist made this desolate land the breeding floor for her imagination and all her future creations. Return on these ghosts.
