WANG KEPING: Metamorphoses

Evoking some archaic goddesses from the depths of time, Wang Keping ‘s monumental picket sculptures fascinate by their density and sensuality. Maternity, Origin of the World, Cyclops Lady… half-figure, half-totem, they seem frozen in their metamorphoses, suspended between type and formlessness, incarnation and abstraction… Carved in hundred-year-old timber, these hieratic figures appear to return from a concretion of time but in addition include within the fullness of their spherical types and their voluptuous swirls petrified streams of sap nonetheless throbbing with life… Calling for a caress, they conceal in the perfection of their clean and glossy surfaces all the imperfections of the wooden of which the Chinese language artist has made himself the singer: revealing its asperities (veins, knots, hollows…) with the flame of the blowtorch, earlier than sanding it to disclose its “soul,” he “listens to the language of wood”; it's he who imposes his type and his constraints.
