After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, one of the first American television packages to be broadcast in Russia was referred to as Santa Barbara. The photographer’s family looked at this soap opera as a window on the world and on the American dream, defined as «a country through which life can be better, richer and fuller for everybody» by the writer James Truslow Adams in his novel Epic of America (1931). This dream was certainly for a lot of a supply of hope and renewal. The potential of leaving and attaining the inconceivable. Nevertheless, this quest was not all the time made from joys however typically of sufferings and sacrifices: leaving relations, pals, tradition and valuable roots. The artist thus decides to go away for California and succeeds because of the sacrifices of her mother.
